Finch Hobo Bag

I’ve been wanting to make this bag since it was first released last year! It’s a super cute hobo bag that puffs out in the middle and all the photos I saw of the finished bags looked very unique. It’s a pretty versatile pattern because depending on what materials you want to use. I especially like the ones that have the vinyl handles but I decided to play it safe this first time and use quilting cotton for everything. It doesn’t call for fleece but I decided to add it to the exterior to bulk it up a bit. This pattern was very easy to put together - it just took a little extra time because you need to sew all the pieces together in the middle and then top stitch them - but the actual construction was straight-forward and easy to do. I decided to add a zipper pocket instead of the slip pocket because it is quite a large bag and I always like to have a zipper pocket in a big bag. The zipper is pretty challenging because you’re putting it in on a non-flat surface so you just need to be careful. I managed to bunch up my fabric while sewing in the zipper but since I made it for myself, I’ll live with it.

This is one the larger size for me - I like small purses. But I think it’s pretty average size for most people. I might try shrinking the whole thing next time to see how small I can get it without ruining the integrity of the curves. I also would like to try it without the zipper panel. I think a nice magnetic snap would work well with this style. That being said, her way of doing the zipper panel was probably the easiest I’ve seen and it lined up better than I’ve experienced before.

All-in-all, this was a very clear, well-written pattern and was very easy to follow. And since I only used fusible fleece, it was quite easy to turn out and shape. I did manage to find a video for this one and that helped as well. And the one time I could actually use my pinking shears, I managed to totally forget where I put them! D’oh!
