The Maya Wristlet

This wristlet turned out so cute! I had a really good feeling about it and then when I saw this Cotton + Steel floral print I knew this was the pattern I wanted to use it for. I was also fortunate that Jess from Oklaroots had done a tutorial on this one. I decided to go with her modifications because they all made more sense to me. I also decided to add in fusible fleece to bulk up the bag as I was using regular cotton weight fabric and I thought it might be too floppy. Turns out I really didn’t need that extra layer because of the way the panels are sewn together - there’s already plenty of extra bulk. All I really needed to do was put SF101 on everything, which I normally do anyway. So next time I’ll make it without the fleece and it should be easier to sew.

This was my first pattern by Justyna Thandmade and it was fairly easy to follow. I decided to work slightly out of order because it made more sense to me to make the interior and then sew the top zipper in the way I would normally make a zipper pouch. I also don’t feel comfortable adding my zipper pulls in afterwards so I worked with the zipper in one piece. Jess sewed the zipper tab in at the end but that was kind of unwieldy - I think next time I’ll put on the zipper tab before I sew the zipper into the bag. And adding in the snap on the front was easier (since I just did that on the last bag and it’s fresh in my mind).

There are so many nice features about this pattern! I think the back zipper pocket and the front snap pocket are really nice. The card slots in the lining are inspired! I think that would be a great addition to any of the small wristlets I make. And being able to use an accent fabric in the front just adds a nice pop to the bag. I liked my fabric so much that I also used it for the lining but I can see how a nice small piece of accent fabric could help use up some smaller scraps. I hate to waste the really pretty fabrics!

This wristlet is definitely going into my product line rotation. I already have some more fabric combos picked out in my head!
