2021 Organization Goals

So here we are in a new year, and I'm going to put my Christmas money towards something other than fabric! Here's the deal. We live in a small(ish) house and when we moved in there really wasn't any room in the master bedroom for all our clothes or furniture. We already had the back room set up as an office (my husband works from home) and we were going to use the front room as a guest room. Given the small closets, there really wasn't anywhere else for me to put things. So I took over the front room as a closet/craft room. Now at the time we moved in I was mostly doing crochet and scrapbooking (still do) so there was plenty of space - even enough to put the elliptical machine in there.

I started sewing a few years ago. It's been a dream of mine for a while, ever since I made some neck pillows as Christmas presents. I was able to take a community summer class at my local quilt shop and got totally hooked! I kept expanding my collection of fabric, zippers, hardware, interfacing (you get it - it's a lot of stuff) and had nowhere to put everything. Since this house is smaller than our last house and we're renting, we put all the extra furniture in the garage for whenever we can afford to move into a larger house. I was daydreaming about craft rooms (and flipping through Pinterest) and had the idea of using my old dish hutch as a place to store fabric and supplies. So now the elliptical machine is in the garage and the hutch is in my front room.

I was also able to clear out my cute white cube drawers from Target. I had accumulated so much random craft stuff (like craft paint from 10 years ago) that I really wasn't using any longer. So now I store my zippers and hardware in those drawers. They are very handy and they all match so that's nice.

I was also using my old entertainment center to store all my scrapbooks and supplies but it was very awkward because the openings aren't really built for storage - they are more like display areas with lots of wasted space. Everyone's Pinterest craft rooms were using the cute Ikea cube cabinets. I knew I didn't want to use those to store fabric because I have two dogs and I don't want my fabric to get dusty or dirty (or pick up kitchen smells...unless it's bacon...that might be a good selling point). But then I realized that I can store the scrapbooks and yarn in the cubes (the Kallax cubes are the right size to fit scrapbooks in case you are interested). So I ordered some with my Christmas money!

They showed up the day after New Years so I got to spend my holiday weekend putting together the shelves (just kidding, I talked my husband into "helping" me). They didn't have the big 4x4 unit in stock so I ordered two of the 2x2s. Once I got those set up I realized I had a lot of wasted space at the top so I ordered another 1x4 to go on top. Then I ordered some of the cloth bins to go inside in my signature color (turquiose).

I'm so excited to have everything organized and feel like I'm not wasting so much space in the small room.
