Dumpling Production

No, not those kind of dumplings! I finally started taking my remnant pieces of fabrics from projects and turning them into smaller pouches. I picked out four small pouch patterns that I’ve already made and feel would be good sellers. The first one I did was the Persimmon Dumpling Pouch from Sew Sweetness. This is a really cute clamshell shape. Unfortunately, it’s been a year since I made one for the first time and I didn’t write down how difficult it was to finish the bag! It’s this really tight space that you have to get into and try to box the corners. Not to mention that the zipper has to be way longer than the bag so you have room to manuever around. So I hadn’t ordered enough of some of them and had to substitute. And (sucks to be me) I had already cut all of the pieces out (trying to be efficient) before remembering how hard they were so I had to commit to finishing all of them. So it was a week-long struggle to pump myself up to finish them all.

The good thing is that the production line way of sewing is really faster so that bodes well for my future projects. I didn’t even cut all the fabric in one go (I don’t think I’m that talented with the rotary cutter and I don’t have an acrylic template). It would be even faster if I was to stack them all up and cut out that way, but even cutting separately it was faster because I was cutting out all the same shapes.

And I got to try the quilt-as-you-go method in the pattern of cutting strips and sewing them down one on top of the other. I had a lot of strips left from a train case I made early on and wanted to try this out. It worked out really well! It’s a nice design feature.

So other than the size of the pouch and the angles making it difficult to sew together, it’s a really cute design. But I think I will be switching to a different pouch for the purpose of using up all my leftover fabric as the point is to do them quickly and use an easy pattern.
