Sunburst Granny Square Blanket

I was watching another crochet YouTuber and saw this beautiful blanket! I just had to recreate it. I could picture it on my couch and it’s bright colors in my living room. I carefully studied her color patterns, watched a tutorial video by my favorite crocheter, and set off to Joann’s to find the yarn! They were having a good yarn sale so it was good timing for me. I was able to find a yarn brand that was inexpensive but still soft to the touch and had a nice variety of colors to choose from. I then picked out the colors I liked based on my inspiration photo and made sure they were colors that I could mix and match together. And then I wasn’t sure if I wanted to have a white border to everything or maybe cream or gray. Once I picked out the bright colors I determined that only the white really looked good against those.

Then I balled up all the yarns. These balls were way to big to all fit in a project bag so I split them into two balls each. I wasn’t sure about the color combinations so I did a little color exercise and made a map of a few color combos I wanted to try. And then I tried making a few squares. I think I made 14 in total so I could see which ones looked best together. I really only needed eight that I could mix together. Next I had to figure out the layout and the amount I needed of each (math is hard!). That took me a while!

I also needed to invest in a blocking board so that all my finished squares would be uniformly the same shape instead of wonky. Looking back I wish I had gotten the larger 12 inch board because then I could have fit four sets of blocking on one square. With the eight inch block that I got, I can only fit one set of pins so I can only block a few squares at once. And once I take them off, how am I supposed to store them so they don’t get messed up again? Where am I going to store 126 blocks? I guess we’ll see - maybe I can buy another box to store them in.

Below is what I’ve accomplished so far and I’ll share the next part of the process with you in a future post. I’ve linked my vlog about this project below if you would like to see the whole process.
